Western Maine Mustang

A Program Rooted in Horsemanship

Western Maine Mustang is a mission-driven training and education program focused on the responsible gentling, development, and placement of American mustangs.

Our work is grounded in clear fundamentals, thoughtful progression, and long-term suitability. While our focus on mustangs represents a purposeful evolution, our foundation remains rooted in structured horsemanship and rider education.

Based at Sparrowhawk Ranch, the program continues a legacy of training built on patience, consistency, and respect for the horse.

Our Story

Western Maine Mustang grew from the foundation of Sparrowhawk Ranch, a long-standing equestrian program nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains. Bordered by the White Mountain National Forest to the west and the Pleasant River to the south and east, the ranch has always been shaped by its landscape—quiet, steady, and deeply connected to the land.

For years, Sparrowhawk Ranch served as a place where horses were started, developed, and educated in a hands-on, working environment. As the program expanded through young sport horse development and colt starting, a deeper commitment to American mustangs began to take shape. What started as traditional training gradually evolved into a focused effort to create a clear and sustainable pathway for wild horses transitioning from western holding facilities.

Western Maine Mustang represents that evolution. While the name marks a new chapter, the roots remain firmly grounded in the history of Sparrowhawk Ranch—where horsemanship, stewardship, and steady development have always been at the center of the work.
