Western Maine Mustang
Our Mustang Program
From Transition to Purpose
Western Maine Mustang focuses on the responsible development of American mustangs transitioning from western holding facilities into structured training and purposeful placement.
Each horse enters the program with individual consideration and progresses at an appropriate pace. Our emphasis is not speed, but preparedness.
Through consistent handling, clear expectations, and systematic under-saddle work, we aim to build confident, capable horses ready for long-term success.
Selection
Careful evaluation of suitability for training and long-term success.
Gentling
Establishing trust, handling, and foundational understanding.
Saddle Start
Structured introduction to under-saddle work with emphasis on confidence and clarity.
Evaluation
Ongoing assessment of temperament, athletic ability, and long-term suitability.
Intentional Placement
Matching each horse to a home aligned with its development and potential.
Our programs serve two populations:
American mustangs finding their way from holding facilities into purposeful lives, and regular Americans finding their own path forward.
Our Human-Focused Programs
From Transition to Purpose
Homeschooling Program
Western Maine Mustang welcomes homeschool families looking for experiential, hands-on learning outside the classroom. Students engage directly with horse care, handling, and horsemanship - building responsibility, patience, and confidence alongside our mustangs.
This is education that moves.
Community at Risk
We believe access to horses shouldn't be a privilege. Our community program creates intentional pathways for at-risk youth and under-served community members to connect with our horses and our team.
Time at the barn builds trust, structure, and a sense of belonging.
Therapeutic Equestrian Program
Horses meet people where they are. Our therapeutic equestrian program serves individuals navigating mental health challenges, from depression, anxiety, grief, and PTSD to recovery from substance use.
Working alongside sensitive, perceptive animals creates an environment for healing, self-regulation, and growth.
Foundation House Partnership
We maintain a close partnership with Foundation House, a men's residential program focused on mental health and substance use recovery. Participants come to the ranch, work with our horses, and find in that work something grounding and real.
Building a round pen. Caring for a horse. Learning to show up.
